Blackheath Choir is a friendly and dynamic mixed chorus of approximately 70 singers based in Blackheath, South East London. We perform 3 main concerts per year, with some additional events, and aim to present wide-ranging repertoire choices to a high standard.

We’re delighted to announce that long-time member and our Concert Manager Brian Woodley has been awarded the Making Music’s President’s Award – recognising exceptional volunteer service to a leisure-time music group.

Brian has been a pillar of the choir for over 40 years and we are so grateful for all his efforts.

Adopt a Music Creator 2023

We are thrilled to be working with composer Fraz Ireland as part of Making Music’s Adopt a Music Creator scheme. The scheme pairs leisure-time music groups with emerging composers, leading to the premiere of their new work in concert, plus a recording and possible broadcast on BBC Radio 3. Fraz’s composition “Sing Something New (Songs of Celebration)” will feature in our Winter 2023 concert.

Fraz Ireland is a composer and percussionist whose work often explores a provocative and playful relationship with the audience, often engaging with storytelling, and incorporating extra-musical elements such as text, video, and images. Fraz studied composition on the ‘joint course’ at the University of Manchester and the Royal Northern College of Music.

Fraz was a Britten-Pears Young Artist in 2020 and has worked with ensembles including the Riot Ensemble, the Tallis Scholars and the Ligeti Quartet. In the past year Fraz’s projects have included an interactive soundscape as the composer-in-residence for a conference, a brass fanfare imitating real-world sounds that was performed in St Paul’s Cathedral, and a choose-your-own-adventure style piano piece as part of Psappha’s composing for… scheme.
